Woke up this morning to a racket, but not the usual Propane-powered blueberry cannons (although I could hear them too). No, it was something a little closer. I looked out the bedroom window, and perched in the Magnolia tree was a baby house sparrow. After a short while of staring at him, I decided to give him a name: Sir Chips A. Lot.

No, he’s not a cool raptor nor a Sandhill Crane, Blue Heron or other bird of distinction. He’s rather simple and ordinary…but to me, he’s beautiful.

I tend to think that nothing is simple or ordinary if one pays enough attention to it. We had American robins nesting in the back yard — and robins are as common as house sparrows around here — and I was enthralled watching the mother robin and her young, and thrilled when all three fledged, and I’m still delighted to see them mining for worms in my garden.

I too once saw House Sparrows and Starlings as ordinary uninteresting birds. Now I see them through different eyes as beautiful interesting birds, very social, yet always squabbling and falling out.
Watch them long enough and you recognise that they also have personalty and humour. How great to watch a group of these birds at bath time.
I now feel privileged that they come to visit me.
